Kidney function Flashcards
What are the EXCRATORY functions of the kidney?
- Waste products BUN
- Water and salt (sodium) balance
What are the ENDOCRINE functions of the kidney?
- Renin secretion
- Erythropoietin production
What are the METABOLIC functions of the kidney?
- Vitamin D activation
- CYP450 isoenzymes
- Metabolism of insulin and steroids
- pH regulation
Relationship of SCr to GFR
Every double in SCr leads to a 2 fold decrease in GFR
What is the significance of BUN:SCr?
(What does it indicate?)
Related to renal perfusion, an increase in BUN:SCr means less perfusion
What is the normal rance for BUN:SCr?
10:1 - 20:1
>20:1 indicates low perfusion
Possible causes for high BUN:SCr?
- Dehydration
- Heart Failure exacerbation (COLD)
- Sepsis
Polyuria
Urine output >3000mL/day
Normal urine output
1000-3000mL
Oliguria
<400mL
Anuria
<50 mL
Proteinuria
Marker of glomerular damage on podocytes
What does proteinuria indicate
- Progression of diabetic nephropathy
- Progression of CKD
- Risk of cardiovascular disease
- Risk of mortality
Cockcroft-Gault CrCl equation
IBW equation
Male = 50 + (2.3 * height inches >60”)
Female = 45.5 + (2.3 * height inches >60”)
