Prejudice
Judging a person before you know them based on a stereotype.
Stereotype
a fixed idea or image of a group of people.
Discrimination
Treating someone unfairly because of prejudice.
Positive Discrimination
Treating a minority that is usually discriminated against with special favours.
Racism
Prejudice or discrimination against someone on the grounds of ethnic origin.
Sexism
Prejudice or discrimination against someone on the grounds of gender.
Asylum Seeker
Someone seeking safety in another country.
Equality
The belief that everyone should be treated the same.
Diversity
The belief that everyone has the right to express their differences.
Scapegoat
Someone who is blamed for things that may not be their fault.
Segregation
Keeping different groups of people (e.g. ethnic groups) separate.
‘Jim Crow’ laws
Laws in the southern states of America that discriminated against black people.
Nonviolent direct action
Using means other than violence to challenge injustice directly (e.g. sit-ins, boycotts).
Civil disobedience
Deliberately disobeying the law because it is unjust.
Boycott
Refusing to buy or use something (e.g. public transport).
