The companion of the child being circumcised.

The ceremony of giving money to redeem the first born son.
Bar Mitzvah
Celebration of coming of age for a boy aged 13 - Son of the Commandment.
Bat Mitzvah
Celebration of coming of age for a girl aged 12 - Daughter of the Commandment.
Kiddushin
Hebrew for Betrothal - made holy or set aside. First part of the marriage ceremony.
Ketubah
Wedding contract.
Mazel Tov
Good luck shouted during the breaking of glass ceremony at a Jewish wedding.
Shiva
An intense period of mourning lasting 7 days from the day of burial.
Kaddish
A prayer said by mourners that praises God and asks for peace.
Kosher
Food that meets the Jewish dietary laws.
Trefah
Food that Jews are forbidden to eat. Eg pork, camel, rodents, reptiles, prawns, frogs.
Rosh Hashanah
Festival of two days to mark Jewish New Year and start of period leading up to Yom Kippur.
Days of Awe
The period of 10 days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur.
Shofar
Ram’s horn blown daily at synagogue one month before Rosh Hashanah.
Yom Kippur
Holiest and most important day in the Jewish calendar; Day of Atonement.
Pesach
Festival of remembrance of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt - 7 or 8 days celebration in Spring.
Haggadah
Book which is read from during the Seder service.
Seder service
The service and meal that celebrates Passover.
Matzo
Unleavened bread.
Seder plate
The plate that holds symbolic food on the table during the Seder service.
