Keywords - inherited change Flashcards
Allele
alternative form of a gene with a specific loci
Genotype
Describes the alleles an organism contains
Phenotype
Observable or biochemical characteristics of an organism, determined by the interaction between expression of its genotype and the environment
Dominant
Dominant allele is one that is always expressed in the phenotype
Recessive
Recessive allele is only expressed in the phenotype when both inherited alleles are identical
Codominant
Two different alleles are described as codominant if both are expressed in the phenotype
Heterozygote
An organism in which the alleles at a particular locus differ from each other
Homozygote
An organism that has identical alleles at a particular locus
Linkage
Genes that are on the same chromosome and that tend to be inherited together (sex-linked or autosomal)
Epistasis
When the allele of one gene affects or masks the expression of another in the phenotype
