Keywords Flashcards
Lever
A simple machine that uses the turning effect of a force
Fulcrum
The point around which a lever turns
Load
The resistance motion against which a lever works.
Effort
The force used to cause movement in a simple machine.
First class lever
A lever with the fulcrum between the effort and the load
Second class lever
A lever with the load between the effort and the fulcrum
Third class lever
A lever with the effort between the load and the fulcrum
Inclined plane
A simple machine that uses upward sloping surfaces to reduce the effort required for a task
Wedges
A simple machine, called an inclined plane, that reduces the force required to cut through objects or stop them from moving
Screws
A curved inclined plane
Wheel & Axle
Machines used to make things move faster=speed multiplyer
Pulleys
A special type of wheel and axle that makes it easier for you to lift a load.
Block and tackle
A system of pulleys in which there are both fixed and moving pulleys
Gear
A toothed wheel and axle that can turn other toothed wheelsq
Bevel gear
Gear wheels at right angles to each other that can change vertical to horizontal motion
Idler gear
A gear that can be used between the driving and driven gear to make the gears turn in the same direction
Rack and Pinion gear
Gears that change the movement of driving gears into the upward
Driving gear
A gear that causes another gear to move
Driven gear
A gear that is moved by another gear
Mechanical advantage
The advantage of force-multiplying levers or other machines as defined as load/effort
Axle
The part of a machine which makes the outer wheel rotate
Axle
The part of a machine which makes the outer wheel rotate
