Keywords Flashcards
Fair test
Only the independent variable has been allowed to change. Everything else is kept the same.
Error/uncertainty
When the result is not quite as expected but is close to the real value.
Hypothesis
An idea which you think can explain certain facts or observations (things you’ve seen)
Preliminary trial
An experiment similar to the one you want the do in your investigation- used to test whether the values you have chosen will give measurable results that may show a pattern .
Reproducible
Someone else can do your experiment in either a similar or different way but still get the same results.
Sketch graph
A line graph that just shows the general trend of your results- no numbers are needed on the axes and no points are plotted but axes MUST be labeled.
Variables
Things that can affect the outcome of your experiment.
Categoric
These have values that have labels, e.g names of plants, or types of materials
Continuous
These have values that can be counted (e.g number of shrimp) or measured (e.g, light intensity, flow rate)
Control
This variable could affect your results so must be kept the same or monitored in your experiment.
Dependent variable
This is your results- the thing you measure every time you change the independent variable.
Independent variable
The thing you change in your experiment
Repeatable
When the experiment is repeated by the same person. They use the same method and equipment and obtain the same result.
Reliable
When the data can be repeated and reproduced by others
Valid
The data is reliable and answers the original question.
