Chi Rho

Consubstantial
The belief that Jesus is the same substance/ essence as the Father i.e. Jesus is also God.
Counter Reformation
The Catholic Church’s response to the Reformation
Denomination
A subgroup within a religion e.g. Catholicism is a denomination within Christianity.
Doctrine
Church teaching that is accepted by all Catholics e.g. the Trinity.
Ecumenical Council
A meeting of bishops from around the world to establish/ clarify Catholic beliefs.
Evangelise
The spread the Good News about Jesus/ Christianity.
Excommunicate
When somebody is formally excluded from the Church community and may no longer receive the sacraments.
Heresy
A belief that contradicts (goes against) official Church teaching.
Incarnation
Jesus is God in human form.
Indulgences
Priests receiving payment for prayers.
Mission
Travelling to new places to teach people about Christianity

When the Protestant Church was established in the 1500s as an alternative to the Catholic Church.
