Falsifiability
the capacity for some proposition, statement, theory or hypothesis to be proven wrong.
Observational equivalence
a situation where different underlying factors or causes can produce similar observable outcomes or behaviors.
Selection biased
bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups, or data for analysis in such a way that proper randomization is not achieved
Anarchy
the idea that the world lacks any supreme authority or sovereignty
Balancing
From balance of power: the posture and policy of a nation or group of nations protecting itself against another nation or group of nations by matching its power against the power of the other side.
Bandwagoning
when a state aligns with a stronger adversarial power and concedes that the stronger former adversary - now partner - disproportionately gains in the spoils they conquer together
Self help
the concept in which states only work in international forums for their own gain.
Institutions
humanly devised structures of rules and norms that shape and constrain individual behavior
Status quo states
strive to preserve things as they are
Revisionist states
seek to change things in international politics
Deterrence
threats or limited force by one party that can convince another party to refrain from initiating some other course of action.
Identity
the individual characteristics by which a person or thing is recognized
Collective action problem
situation in which all individuals would be better off cooperating but fail to do so because of conflicting interests between individuals that discourage joint action
Public good
commodities or services that benefit all members of society, and which are often provided for free through public taxation
Free riding
benefiting from a collective good without having incurred the costs of participating in its production
Democratic peace
a theory that democratic states rarely if ever go to war with one another
International intervention
the term for the use of force by one country or sovereign state in the internal or external affairs of another
Terrorism
the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.
