keywords Flashcards
periodic table
list of all known elements grouped wiht those of similar properties
element
an element is a pure substance consisting of only 1 atom
compound
when 2 or more different elements chemicaly combine or join together to form a new substance
atom
smallest unit of ordinary matter
alkali
a bisic soluble hydroxide of alkali matals or alkaline earth metals
has a pH of 8-14
neutralisation
is a reaction where an acid reacts with an alkali to fomr a nuetral solution of salt and water
salt
chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base
solute
solution that dissolves to make a solution eg-salt
solvent
the substance that does the dissolving eg-water
solution
a solute + solvent produce a solution eg-sea water
alkali metals
the group 1 metals in the periodic table are known as the alkali metals
they include lithium, sodium and potassium, which all react with water
the reactivity increases as you go down the group
reactivity series
the order of reactivity of a group of elements
displacement
more reactive element will displace/push out a less reactive element from a compound and replace it
eg-magnesium + copper sulfate – copper + magnesium sulfate
oxidation
metals react with oxygen in the air to produce metal oxides eg- magnesium + oxygen – magnesium oxide
what are metal oxides?
they are bases that react with acids and neutralise them
