To add a greater meaning to the story, can help to reveal themes, or to characterize the people in a story
Purpose of Satire
Add humor, ridicules/critiques a person, belief, concept, or society.
Purpose of Symbolism
Explain or portray an idea without outright saying it, can help reveal theme.
Purpose of Simile/Metaphor
Created Imagery and draws connections between important aspects of the story, adds to characterization through comparison.
Purpose of Imagery
Uses senses to strengthen understanding, draws on reader’s experiences to enhance experience
Purpose of Foreshadowing
Give hint of what is to come, allows reader to reflect and see causes of events
Purpose of Dialect
Brings characters and setting to life, gives depth to the cultural or social background of characters
Purpose of Personification
Add deeper meaning to elements that are do not possess human attributes, helps readers connect with and visualize things.
Purpose of Flashback
To add more exposition and further develop characters
