A partnership between countries to support each other if they are attacked.
Alliance
The name given to the most important and powerful countries.
Great Powers
Love of country or nation.
Patriotism
Extreme patriotism- often believing in independence and the superiority of the nation.
Nationalism
Believing that your country should promote a strong army and navy to achieve its aims.
Militarism
Gaining power by extending by taking over colonies and expanding an empire.
Imperialism
‘world politics’. The Kaiser’s policy was designed to turn Germany into a world power by building an overseas empire, growing its world trade and increasing its naval power.
Weltpolitik
The Emperor of Germany. Kaiser Wilhelm II was in power from 1888-1918.
Kaiser
Agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Also known as the Central Powers.
Triple Alliance
Agreement between Britain, France and Russia.
Triple Entente
Arms Race
Competition between countries to have the biggest and best army or navy.
Slav
An ethnic group in Central and Eastern Europe- e.g. Serbians, Russians, Poles, Czechs, Croats.
Assassination
To kill someone important or significant, usually for a political reason.
Ultimatum
Making a demand and threatening consequences if it is not agreed to,
Mobilise
Preparing the military for war.
Schlieffen Plan
The German plan to attack and quickly defeat France, by going through Holland and Belgium, before Russia would be ready to invade from the East.
The July Crisis
The chain reaction of events that led to the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914 after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
BEF
The British Expeditionary Force- small British army used to defend Belgium.
Stalemate
A draw- when two opponents can’t make any progress against each other.
Infantry
Soldiers that fight on foot.
