Term: Colour
Used to create mood and convey meaning.
Term: Setting
Includes the location, be it an exterior, interior, a real place or a specially built set on a soundstage or on location.
Term: Props
Items used both in exterior and exterior locations, e.g. pictures on a wall, spectacles, etc.
Terms: Costume, hair and make-up
Physical appearance of characters on set.
Term: Staging
How characters and objects are positioned within the frame.
Term: Diegetic sound
Sound that the characters can hear.
Term: Non-diegetic sound
Sound that does not come from the actual world of the narrative.
Term: Pleonastic sound
Sound that is exaggerated, e.g. a dripping tap.
Term: Breaking the fourth wall (non-diegetic)
When a character stops interactive/other characters to talk to the audience. This dialogue is then non-diegetic.
Term: Parallel sounds
Sounds that complement the images on screen.
Term: Contrapuntal sounds
Sounds that contract with the images on screen.
Term: Synchronous sound
Contribute to the realism of film as the sounds heard match the actions on screen.
Term: Asynchronous sound
Sound effects that are not matched with a visible source of the sound on screen.
Term: Cut
A straight image from one image to another with nothing in between.
Term: Fade
When the picture emerges out of, or disappears into, black or white. It is used most often at the end of a major scene or act.
