Key Words Biological Molecules Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
ionic bonding happens between ions, with electrostatic forces holding them together.
What is covalent bonding?
covalent bonding is when atoms share pairs of electrons. these are the strongest bond
What is hydrogen bonding?
when polar molecules attract each other through the positive charged hydrogen ions and the other negative ion
What is a polar molecule?
a molecule with uneven electron distribution leaving the ends with a charge.
What are monomers?
Small units that can be combined
What are polymers?
long chains of monomer subunits
What is polymerization?
the process in which polymers are made
What is an amino acid?
a biological molecule made up of a anime group, carboxylic acid group and a functional group (R-group). these are the basis of proteins
What is a polypeptide
a polymer of many amino acids joined together by peptide bonds
What are condensation reactions?
Reactions in which smaller molecules are made into larger molecules releasing water.
What are hydrolysis reactions?
Reactions in which larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules requiring the splitting of water for this to occur
What is metabolism?
The total sum of chemical reactions in the body.
