Democracy meant rule by the people, oligarchy meant rule by the few.
A democracy is a society in which the citizens are sovereign and control the government.
What are the Australian democracy core defining values?
Freedom of election and being elected

Freedom of speech, expression and religious belief; rule of law; and other basic human rights.
Is it compulsory to vote?
Yes it is, if you are over the age of 18 and are an Australian citizen, if you do not vote you will get a fine.
What are some advantages of compulsory voting?
It is important for all citizens to vote in order to have a fair representation of the opinion of the public on which party should be in power.
What are some disadvantages of having compulsory voting?
It is unfair as some people do not have an informed opinion on political issues and may be voting without sufficient information.
What can you do if you are under the age but would still like to be involved?
You can join a political party or lobby group, such as Greenpeace. Other ways include posting a comment on social media, Twitter and Facebook.
Who was the first civilisation to have laws.
Mesopotamia is believed to be the first civilisation to draw law codes. The oldest laws are the Code of Hammurabi who was the king of Babylon between 1792-1759BC. The laws were carved into stone and put all around the city so that people could see them.
