What was Feudalism?
Feudalism was the system of land ownership where rulers divided land among their followers in return for loyalty and taxes. In simpler terms Feudalism was rulers trading land for loyalty and taxes
What were peasants?
Peasants were people who worked on a lord’s land. Peasants = Slaves.
What were the curtain walls in a castle?
Curtain walla enclosed and protected the castle and the people living in there.
What was the keep?
The keep was the main building inside the castle. It held the lord’s apartment, the great hall and a chapel.
What were the dungeons?
The dungeons were used to store food and hold prisoners.
What were battlements?
Battlements ran along the top of the keep and the walls. Soldiers would patrol along them day and night. Towers/turrets were usually build in the corners or these walls.
What was the bailey?
The bailey was the enclosed area around the keep.
What was a drawbridge?
The drawbridge was bridge that could be lowered and raised to control who enters the castle.
What was the portcullis?
The portcullis was a metal grid that could be lowered over the gate if necessary.
What was a moat?
The moat was a deep ditch filled with water surrounding the castle.
What was a dowry?
A dowry was a sum of money or land paid to the groom.
What was the oath of chivalry?
The oath of chivalry was to stay loyal to his lord, protect the poor and weak and be brave in battle.
What was a tithe?
a tithe was a tenth of their income paid to the local priest.
What was a serf?
A serf was a farmer that worked for the lord six days a week, and in return the recieved a small plot of land they could grow food and build a small house on.
What was a charter?
A charter was a contract where a town was granted freedom to run its own affairs but in return had to pay taxes to the king.
What was a curfew?
A curfew was a set time where all fires had to be put out to prevent things from burning.
What was a guild?
A guild was an organisation of skilled people who worked for the same trade.
What was bleeding?
Bleeding was cutting the patient and draining some blood.
What was cupping?
Cupping was placing heated metal cups on the skin to draw fluids to the surface.
What was leeching?
Leeching was using leeches to draw blood or other fluids out of the body.
What was amputation?
Amputation was cutting off a limb to stop an infection from spreading.
