Chordal
All playing the same notes (not unison which is playing the same melody)
Leitmotif
A motif which is usually associated with a certain character or thing

Inversion
Rearrangement of the order of notes in a chord
Difference between drone and pedal
A drone can be a chord, a pedal is a single note in the bass (inverted is higher up)
Power chords
Type of chord with only two notes - used by guitarists a lot
Passing notes
A musical note. That is not part of the main chord but is used to bridge or connect two chord tones
Auxiliary notes
A non-chord tone a note above or below the chord note, waiting to be resolved (sus chords)
Augmetation
The lengthening of time of the notes of the melody
Diminution
Halving the duration of notes in a melody
Episodic work
Like rondo (no repeats) but combing with repetition and contrast - adding previous ideas
Phasing
The time difference between entries (round) - like waves
Portamento
A slide
Phrasing
Lengths of passages and melodies

Tune split into different instruments
Syllabic
One note per syllable singing
Melismatic
Multiple notes per syllable
Sus4 chord
Chord of I,IV,V
Tierce de picardie
Major chord in a minor piece - usually for in perfect cadence
Transposition
Changing the notes of a piece to fit with a chosen key or an instrument if a different key
Retrograde
Playing it backwards
Retrograde inversion
Play upside down and backwards
Aleatoric
Performance left to chance - improv but with visual cues up to interpretation
Sul ponticello
Violin playing technique - bow close to the bridge
Stride
Left hand playing the rhythm section on a piano
Pointillism
More extreme klangfarbenmelodie. Like individual notes for different instruments
