Router
A device that connects to 2 or more networks together and is responsible for forwarding packets of data from one network to another. It finds the best route for data to travel between computers
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
sends the wireless traffic it receives onto the main wired network
Switches
A device that connects to several devices from a wired network. Each computer on the network has its own unique address called a Media Access Control (MAC) address
Network Interface Controller/Card (NIC)
A circuit board installed into a computer that allows it to connect to a network.
Wireless Network Interface Card (WNIC)
Wireless networks require devices to be fit with a WNIC
Transmission Media
They carry data signals from one computer to another
Domain Name Server (DNS)
It takes the domain name and looks up its equivalent network address. The users request is then forwarded to the server that resides at that network address. The DNS translates a domain name into an internet address.

Storing files and data
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
A unique identifier for a resource on the internet
Protocol
A set of rules that governs transmission of data
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
web pages - govern communication between a web server and a client
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
governs the transmission of files across a network and the internet
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
governs the sending of emails over a network to a mail server
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
governs retrieving emails from email servers
Post Office Protocol (POP)
governs receiving emails
