Aid
a donation of something (money, medical care, water ect.) from one country to another country
debt relief
the cancelling, reduction or management of the debt of country struggling to repay their debt. This is often done if the country has no money to spend on any development projects
deindustrialisation
the decline of traditional industries in a a place
development
the positive change that makes things better. As a country develops it usually means that people’s standard of living and quality of life will improve
globalisation
the growth and spread of ideas around the world. This can involve the movement or spread of culture, people, money goods and information
GNI
the total value of goods and services produced by a country, plus money earned from and paid to, other countries. It is usually shows as per head (per capita) of the population
industrial structure
the composition of a country’s industry e.g. how many people are employed in primary, secondary, tertiary quaternary industries
Human development index (HDI)
devised by the United Nations, HDI links wealth to health and education. It combines these three indicators so it’s a composite measure; life expectancy at birth, number of years of education and GNI per head
intermediate technology
using equipment and techniques that are suitable to the country using it. As many poor countries do not have the skills to maintain expensive equipment, small scale, basic solutions are usually more appropriate
post-industrial economy
where manufacturing industry decides to be replaced by growth in the service sector and the corresponding development of a quaternary sector
