Chronological
– in time order.
Decade-
ten years (10).
Century-
one hundred years (100). The 1100s is the 12th century, the
1900s is the 20th century.
BC-
Before Christ (events before his birth)-going down .
AD-
Anno Domini (event after Christ’s birth)-going up.
Timeline-
Events put in chronological order.
Period-
a stretch of time in History that is associated with particular
characteristics, rulers, or events. E.g. Medieval.
Historical Source-
something that tells us about the past.
Primary Source-
a source of information created at the time of study- a
leftover from the past.
- Secondary Source-
Secondary Source- a second-hand account- this could be a textbook,
film, podcast, or a historian’s writing.
Evidence-
Historians interpret sources to make sense of the past, they
use evidence
Inference-
to make an educated guess from a source.
Interpretation-
a point of view based on evidence.
Medieval Period-
the ‘Middle Ages’ between the Ancient and Modern
periods-from the 5th century to the 15th century.
Empire
Lots of land and peoples, ruled over by one country and ruler.
Faith
what people believe, their religion.
Trade
buying and selling things
Chistendom
The Christian world. In the medieval period, this meant the Catholic world.
Byzantium
The powerful Empire, which followed the Roman Empire in the East (5th-15th century
Caliph
The chief ruler in muslim Empires.
Emperor-
The ruler of an Empire, Very powerful
Orthodox Church
A type of Eastern Christianity
