UN charter
A treaty of the UN that aims to uphold the human rights of citizens across countries.
All members are bound by it’s articles.
Geneva Convention
A series of agreements that set out how people, such as enemy soldiers, doctors and civilians should be treated in time of war.
Civilians
People who are not in the military or the police.
International Criminal Court (ICC)
A permanent, international court that judges criminals who might have committed crimes against the international community.
Negotiation
A discussion with someone in order to reach an agreement with them.
International Law
a body of rules, treaties or conventions recognised and followed by countries who agree to their terms
Damages
Money that is paid to someone by a person or organization who was responsible for causing injury or loss.
Genocide
A deliberate attempt to kill or destroy a group of people based on their nationality, ethnicity, religion or race.
International Court of Justice (ICJ)
The main legal court of the UN. It settles disagreements between countries and is sometimes called the World Court.
Council of Europe
A body of 47 member states that aims to protect human rights and democracy in Europe.
European Court of Human Rights
The court of the council of Europe.
It deals with people of countries that do not respect the European Convention or human rights.
Indigenous people
Communities who originate from, or are attached to, an area where modern countries have since been established.
Charity
A group or organization set up to provide help or raise money for those in need.
Social movement
An effort organized and coordinated by by people to achieve a goal, usually a social or political one.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
Groups set up to work independently of any government.
Their purpose is to address a social or political issue.
