Connotations are like hidden meanings or feelings that words can carry
Theyre not the actual definition of a word but the ideas and emotions that come along with it
So, connotations are the extra feelings and images that words bring to your mind beyond their basic meanings
They can help make your writing more interesting and expressive by adding emotions and depth to your words
Analysing word choice
Using the following formula to analyse word choice:
The word choice of … has connotations of …(word similar to/deeper meaning)
This is effective because…(actually anyalse)
Three main types of Imagery
Metaphor: A compariosn between two things
Simile: A compariosn between two things using words LIKE or AS
Personification: A compariosn where somehting that is not alive is made to sound alive
Analysing imagery
When analysing imagery, use the “Just as…So too…” method or formula
eg. The peaceful lake because a smooth mirror
Just as a mirror is complelty flat, so too this emphasises how still and refelctive the surface of the water was
