Neolithic farmers believed in an afterlife where the soul left the body and went somewhere else. They built megalithic tombs for this. There are 3 types of these tombs: court cairn, passage tomb and dolmen.

Passage tomb:

A

It looks like a hill or circular mound on the Earth. Inside, it led to the chambers to the remains of humans. There are about 200 of these in Ireland, varying in size. The most famous is Newgrange in Co. Meath about 8 km West of Drogheda on the North side of River Boyne. Brú na Bóinne was another 5,500 BCE megalthic tomb discovered in 2018. Stonehenge is in UK with it being 13 feet high and 7 feet wide.

A
  • Archaeologists started excavating in the 1960’s and by using carbon dating its beloved to have been built between 2675 BCE and 2485 BCE.
  • Archaeologists believe it took 600 men to build it over a period of 16 years.
  • It was decorated with Megalithic art.
  • Its most famous for its chambers being lit up by the winter solstice sunrise.
  • The roof box allowed sunlight to enter on 21st December, shortest day of the year.
  • Each dawn from 19th to 23rd if December, a narrow beam of light enters the roof box and slowly reaching the back of the chamber floor.
  • The event lasts 7 minutes.
