Why is Pride a key theme? (give an example of a characters pride)
- a constant presence in a character’s attitudes and treatments of each other.
- Darcy’s pride aboit his social status makes him look down on others, during the first proposal (chapter 11)
is displayed the most, his pride is the reason he struggled against is feelings for her, due to Bennett’s family’s low connections
Why is prejudice a key theme? (give an example of a character or moment where it’s shown)
- Prejudice refers to the tendency of characters to judge one another based on presumptions; mostly shown through Lizzy
- Elizabeth is quick to judge most, but mostly with Wickham and Darcy. For wickham due to his good looks he is seen as charming and handsome, over time (chapter 12) she leaned of his despicable attitude.
- With Darcy she first saw him as rude and superior, yes he is prideful but he is more caring than appears so, as he does not see the value of dealing with strangers.
How does Austen present prejudice in the novel?
as a stage in a persons moral development, something that can be overcome through reason and compassion
How is Love and Marriage presents in the novel?
- Lizzys goal is for a live match not money
- Austen shows the value of falling inlove not for money through out the books; first seen in Mr collins rejection instead of marrying Mr darcy
- as a contrast Austen used Charllotte lucas as a opposite character compared to lizzy
How is Class, Repuation and wealth represented in the novel
- how the Bennet family are seen by others
- women being dependant on them or their daughters being married for their future.
how does austen critique the institution of marriage in the novel?
- marriage; a social construct used for financial security, shown though a majority of marriages e.g. Charlotte L and Collins and Mr Wickham and Lydia
how are womens roles portrayed in the novel?
through the limited rights of independance on marriage.
what is significant about the opening line of the novel
“truth universal knowledge”is austen poking fun as the social norms and assumptions of that day society
