Power
the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way
Legitimate power
making sure it is democratic -> absolute majority -> not dictatorship
Political actor
individuals who have obtained at least some measure of political power
State
Criteria for a state:
Democracy
a political system (vs an economical system eg capitalism) -> democracy has dot points 8 to 16
Sovereignty
defines a state, cannot be a state unless you are sovereign
Majority rule
Referendum
a national yes/no vote
Absolute majority
50% plus one vote
First past the post/simple majority
most votes win, no absolute majority needed NOT DEMOCRATIC
Minority rights
giving voice / rights to a minority
Regular elections
federal government mandated to be every three years un Australia, but they can be called early
Secret ballot
people don’t know who you vote for
Representative government
responsible government
strong opposition
opposition party being smart to keep the government in check
seperation of powers
the AEC
independent authority to run elections
voter turnout
compulsory voting adds legitimacy
gonig to preference
you did not win your seat of electorate on the first preference
safe seat
a seat in an electorate unlikely to change hands
marginal seat
endanger of changing hands as it was won with a minority
minority govenrment
electing the POTUS
