Natural events which are perceived to be a threat to people, the built environment that humans have had no affiliation with
Hazards
Hazard is distinguished from an extreme event and a disaster.
Disaster
Disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community
Geophysical
Relates to the physics of the Earth
Atmospheric
Relates to the atmosphere of the Earth
Hydrological
Relates to the water of the Earth
Adaptation
Adjusting their living conditions to reduce their levels of vulnerability
Mitigation
Actions aimed at reducing the severity of an event and lessening the impact
Management
Process of dealing with or controlling things or people
Risk Sharing
Involving pre-arranged measures that aim to reduce the loss of life and property damage through public education
Prediction
Methods of predicting hazards, warnings can be more precise and reach more people at risk
Fatalism
The view that people cant do anything to stop the hazard and should just let it happen
Fear
Perception that people feel vulnerable so they move away to a safer area
Duration
The length of time the hazard lasts for
Magnitude
The strength of the hazard
