alliteration
the sane letter or sound at the beginning of words next to eachother
onomatopoeia
when the way a word sounds imitates the sound is describing (e.g band, sizzle, crash)
sibilance
a specific form of alliteration which focuses om ‘s’ sounds. it relies on the repetition of soft consonant sounds in words to create a whooshing or hissing sound in writing. the sounds included ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘c’, ‘ch’
e.g the Shark Shot through the water, CHarging towards the SHore
assonance
when two or more words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sound.
what is emotive language?
using language to create a strong emotional response
what is figurative language?
using figures of speech to be more effective, persuasive or impactful`
symbolism
when the idea,feeling, emotion or other concept is represented by something else. they reflect the figurative meaning of a picture, object, colour etc.
metaphor
a figure of speech which you say something is another thing. you compare the qualities or behaviour of two things using metaphors.
simile
figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, using ‘like or ‘as’
anthropomorphism
when we make something that is not human do or say things that make them seem human
e.g the sorting hat in harry potter
personification
giving human characteristics to something that isn’t to create imagery
imagery
language and description that appeals to the five senses (smell, sight, taste, touch and hear)
what is the difference between personification and anthropomorphism?
anthropomorphism is when something inhuman actually does human like things; personification creates imagery where something inhumane seems human.
