Bildungsroman
A novel of coming-of-age, formation, growth, and/or change. Usually follows a young protagonist as they develop. (Ex. Harry potter)
Blank Verse
Poetic lines of unrhymed iambic pentameter. (Ex. Most of shakespeare; “To be or not to be, that is the question”)
Caesura
a pause in a line that is formed by the rhythms of natural speech rather than meter (ex. //)
Catharsis
an emotional experience brought about by reading certain kinds of literature or seeing some pieces of theater. Audience experiences the characters suffering vicariously, sparking an emotional response. (Ex. Being happy you’re alive after watching a horror film)
Climax
The turning point in the plot or the high point of action
Colloquialism
informal, everyday language– sometimes indicates a specific geographical region (Ex. “y’all”)
Connotation
An idea or meaning suggested by or associated with a word or thing, but not necessarily in the objective dictionary definition
Convention
An understanding between a reader and a writer about certain details of a story that does not need to be explained (Ex. hero saving damsel in distress)
Consonance
repetition of the same consonant sound in rapid succession anywhere in the word or sentence
Couplet
two lines of verse that follow one another and are connected by rhythm and rhyme (Ex. last two lines in all shakespearean sonnets)
