Key Terms Chapter 5 - Classifying Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Synthesis reaction
A chemical reaction in which two or more reactants combine to produce a new product
Decomposition reaction
A chemical reaction in which a chemical compound breaks down (decomposes) into two or more simpler compounds or elements
Single displacement reaction
A chemical reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound
Activity series
A list of elements organized according to their chemical reactivity; the most reactive element appears at the top and the least reactive element appears at the bottom
Double displacement reaction
A chemical reaction in which the positive ions (cations) of two different compounds exchange places, resulting in the formation of two new compounds - one of which may be a precipitate
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a reaction and is regenerated at the end of the reaction
Leaching
A technique used to extract a metal by dissolving the metal in an aqueous solution
Precipitate
An insoluble solid formed in a chemical reaction
