Key Terms, Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is accuracy?
How close a measurement is to the correct value.
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can enter into a chemical combination.
What is Celsius? What is waters freezing point and boiling point in Celsius?
Celsius is a unit of temperature. Water freezers at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
What’s a chemical change?
A chemical change produces a new type of matter from the original.
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of composition, properties and interactions of matter.
What is a compound?
A compound is a pure substance that can be decomposed into two or more elements.
Cubic centimeter (cm^3 or cc)
Is the volume of a cube with an edge length of exactly 1cm.
Cubic meter (m^3) is?
SI until of volume.
What is density?
Density is the ratio of mass to volume for a substance.
What is dimensional analysis?
A way to solve simple unit conversions to more complex.
What is an element?
An element is a substance that is composed of a single type of atom that cannot be decomposed by a chemical change.
Exact numbers.
Numbers derived by counting and does not have fault.
Extensive property?
Property of a substance that depends on the amount of substance.
Fahrenheit?
Unit of temperature. Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and boils at 212 degree Fahrenheit.
What is the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
What is gas?
Gas is the state in which matter has no definite volume nor shape.
What is a Homogeneous mixture?
A homogenous mixture is a solution, combination of substance with a compound that is uniform.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A heterogenous mixture is a combination of substance with a composition that varies.
What is chemical property?
Relates to the change of one kind of matter to another.
What is a hypothesis?
Tentative explanation of observations that act as a guide for gathering and checking information.
What is intensive property?
Intensive property is property of a substance that is independent of the amount of substance.
Kelvin (K)?
SI unit for temperature. 273.15k=0 degree Celsius.
Kilogram(kg)?
Standard SI unit for mass.
What’s a law?
A law is a statement that summarizes many experimental observations. Laws are based on detailed and repeated experiments.
What does the law of conservation of matter?
The law of conservation of matters states that when matter is converted from one type to another, there is no detectable change in the total amount of matter present.
Length?
Measurement of one dimension of an object.
Length?
Measurement of one dimension of an object.
What is liquid?
Liquid is the state of matter that has a definite volume but indefinite shape.
