To ‘paint a picture,’ in details, in words of someone or something. In doing so you include characteristics or traits of the person or thing.
Eclectic
A theatre style made up of a variety of other theatre styles.
Examine
To study or inspect something in close detail in order to better understand it
Given Circumstances
The environmental and situational conditions, which influence a character in a play.
Structured Questions
A type of question requiring a specific response. The length of an answer to a structured question can vary but often only a short answer is required.
Theatre Traditions
The ingredients that make up a theatre style and help to characterize it; they are long-held customs or methods.
Barndoor
A metal device attached to the front of a light to define its beam
Batten
A pipe to which scenery, curtains or lights is attached
Catharsis
A release of repressed emotions.
Denouement
The resolution of the plot of a play
Dramatic Irony
A playwrighting technique where information is given to the audience that one or more characters in the play do not know
Flies
The area above the stage where the lights and scenery are hung
Masking
Where an actor (accidentally or deliberately) stands in front of another, preventing the audience from seeing them
Monochromatic
Where the colors or tones used are all based on the same color
Pathos
An element in drama that arouses feelings of pity and compassion in an audience
Physicalisation
The skills the actor uses to bring a character to life on stage. This can include using the body to portray a character in the acting space.
Prosecenium
An arch or opening between the stage and the audience
Timbre
The character or quality of a sound
Tragic Flaw
A failing of a character that leads to their downfall
Walk-On
A very small acting part in a play or other performance type (usually with little or no dialogue
