Hedonic adaptation
Gloss loss (the happiness gloss of things we want wares off after a short while)
Positive affect
Joy, good feeling

Calculated consumption
Purchasing what I need, thinking ahead about it, cherishing it
Conspicuous consumption
Purchasing for desires, to display how wealthy you are

Experiences rather than stuff!
Choices
Overwhelm us, make us anxiously reconsider (and possibly regret) the choice we do make - decrease in happiness
Two concepts of happiness
- Fleeting pleasure / enjoyment
- Enduring mood states - contentment, flourishing
Happiness set point theory
- 40% of our happiness levels is genetically determined
- 60% is determined by environmental factors
Experienced happiness
Happiness at the time of the event
Remembered happiness
Reinterpretation of happiness we feel after the event
Eudaimonia
Meaningfulness, the good life
