Key Terms Flashcards
Incomplete Dominance.
When dominant allele is not fully expressed.
Co-dominance.
When 2 alleles for a trait are equally expressed with neither being recessive or dominant - creates co-dominance.
Epistasis.
When one gene depends on another gene to be expressed.
Recessive Allele.
An allele whose characteristics only appear in the phenotype if 2 copies are present.
Hereditary Mutation.
A mutation that’s inherited from your parents.
Heterozygous.
When an organism carries 2 copies of different alleles at same locus.
Homozygous.
When an organism carries 2 copies of the same allele allele at same locus.
Locus.
The position on a chromosome where particular allele is found.
Mono-hybrid Inheritance.
The inheritance of a single characteristic (gene) controlled by different alleles.
Phenotype.
Expression of the genetic constitution of an organism and its interaction with environment.
(the characteristic an organism has because of its genes and the effect environment has on them)
Phenotypic Ratio.
The ratio of different phenotype’s (characteristics) in offspring of a genetic cross.
Sex-linked Characteristic.
When allele that codes for a characteristic is found on sex chromosome - X or Y.
Gene.
A section of DNA which codes for a particular protein (polypeptide) which results in a characteristic.
Gene Pool.
Complete range of alleles present in population.
Genetic Code.
Sequence of Base triplets (codons) in mRNA which code for specific amino acids.
