Left-wing
Socialism (communism at extremes, e.g. Stalin)- government plays a large role and makes decisions for people, smaller role for private businesses due to government intervention
Right-wing
Capitalism (fascism at extremes, e.g. Hitler)- government plays a smaller role, larger role for private businesses
Inter-regional
Between regions (North Africa to Europe)
Intra-regional
Within a region (Poland to UK- EU)
Globalisation
The increase in relationships between countries and the increase in businesses operating on an international scale and having international influence
Economic migrants
People who migrate for job opportunities and/or to improve their standard of living
Migrant remittances
Money that a migrant sends from the country in which they are working, back to their family who are living in their country of origin
Refugees
People who have left their home country, often due to conflict or natural disasters
Asylum seekers
Someone who has left their home country due to political reasons (as a political refugee)
Short-term migrant
A person who moves to a country other than that of his or her usual residence for a period of at least three months but less than a year (not for holiday, gap year, recreation etc.)
Long-term migrant
A person who moves to a country other than that of his or her usual residence for a period of at least a year, so that the country of destination effectively becomes his or her new country of usual residence
Net migration rate
The difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants throughout the year (immigration > emigration = positive net migration rate)
Human Development Index (HDI)
Gives a figure, between 0 and 1 (1 being better), for a country, based on its life expectancy, education attainment and GDP per capita
Brandt line
Divides the rich north and the poor south
International migrant stock
The number of people born in a country other than that in which they live
