Key Terms Flashcards
The application of the principals of the natural sciences, especially biology and physiology, to clinical medicine.
Bio medical science
The force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood and expressed in millimeters of mercury.
Blood pressure
Communicable by contact.
Contagious
To recognize a disease by signs and symptoms.
Diagnose
Blood pressure that remains between heart contractions.
Diastolic pressure
An infectious disease that spreads rapidly and sickens a large amount of people.
Epidemic
A measure of cardiac activity usually expressed as the numbers of beats per minute.
Heart rate
The ability of and organism or cell to maintain equilibrium by adjusting its physiology processes in order to function properly.
Homeostasis
Overheating if the body, possibly due extreme weather conditions.
Hyperthermia
High blood pressure.
Hyper tension
Abnormally low body temperatures.
Hypothermia
The state produced by the establishment of an infective agent in or in a suitable host.
Infection
The introduction of a pathogen or antigen into a living organism to simulate the production of antibodies.
Inoculation
A sudden rise in the incident of a disease.
Outbreak
Any disease-producing agent such as a virus, bacteria, or parasite.
Pathogen
The rhythmic expansions and recoil of arteries resulting from heart contractions; can be felt from the outside of the body.
Pulse
Something that indicates the presence of bodily disorder.
Symptom
The blood pressure generated by the heart during a contraction.
Systolic pressure
A harmless variant of a pathogen the simulates a host’s immune system to mount defenses against the pathogen.
Vaccine
A sub-microscopic particle that must infect plant or animal cells to reproduce.
Virus
Measurements of the body’s most basic functions and useful in detecting or monitoring medical problems.
