Key Terms Flashcards
What’s the capacity?
A measure of the amount of material it can carry
What is transportation?
The movement of material
What is deposition?
The dropping of material that was being carried
What transportation process is traction?
This is heavy boulders dragging along the river bed
What transportation process is saltation?
These are small and round stones bouncing off river bed as they are light enough to do so
What transportation process is suspension?
Small particles, this being silt which makes the water muddy - it is lifted to the surface
What transportation process is solution?
Minerals and acids are dissolved - this process can’t be seen
What are erosional processes?
It is the wearing away of land and inside a river - THIS PROCESS CANT BE SEEN
Erosional processes: what is abrasion?
It’s the wearing away of the channel - rubbing of sand
Erosional processes: what is corrosion?
It is water minerals wearing away the land
Erosional processes: what is attrition?
This is little pebbles bumping into one another
Erosional processes: what is hydraulic action?
This is the sheer force of the water
What’s the competence?
The diameter of the largest particle that it can carry for a given velocity
What is through-fall?
Water falling directly into a river
What is through-flow?
Movement of water through the soil
What is transpiration?
Vegetation loses water to the atmosphere through leaves as water vapour
What is run-off?
This is precipitation falls onto the earth’s surface
What is stem-flow?
Water running down stems and branches
What is evaporation?
Water turns from liquid to water vapour and rises into the atmosphere
What is evapotranspiration?
The loss of water from leaves, from water which has evaporated
What is ground water flow?
Water moving within rocks underground
What is infiltration?
Water soaked in the soil from the surface and filling air pockets
What is overland flow surface run off?
Moment of water across the earth’s surface
What is percolation?
Movement of water through rocks and layers of soil underground
