What is America First?
A campaigning organisation founded in Chicago in 1940 to promote American isolationism.
What is the Antitrust act?
Legislation to prevent big business from fixing prices and destroying competition.
What is assimilation?
The integration of new immigrants into American society.
What is axis?
The alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan formed in the late 1930’s.
What is a banking holiday?
A suspension of banking activity to allow financial markets to stabilise and to prevent panic withdrawals.
What is a bear market?
A time when stock market prices are constantly falling
What are belligerents?
Nations legally declared to be at war.
What is ‘black Monday’?
27th may 1935. The declaration by the Supreme Court that Roosevelt’s legislation for the Second New Deal was unconstitutional.
What is ‘black Thursday’ ?
24th October 1929. The day the Wall Street stock market collapsed.
What is ‘black Sunday’?
14th April 1935. A day of exceptionally severe dust storms in the regions affected by drought and wind erosion.
What is the AFL?
The American Federation of Labor. Formed in 1886
What is the Sherman anti-trust act?
- Aimed at preventing price fixing and unfair competition by big monopolies.
What was the platt amendment?
- Claimed to protect Cuba’s independence from foreign intervention. It permitted extensive American involvement in Cuban international and domestic affairs.
What was the lend-lease scheme?
The USA supplied Britain the Soviet Union, France, China and other allied nations with war materials between 1941 and 1945
