Key Terms Flashcards
What is the pathophysiology of Ludwig’s angina?
suppurative inflammation of subq tissue in submental space , or, gangrenous cellulitis
What are the weight guidelines for LMA size: 3 4 5?
30 - 50 kg 50 - 70 kg > 70 kg
What fast track score bypasses the recovery room?
>= 12 within 10 minutes post surgery
What are the indications for an RSI?
pregnant full stomach morbid obesity reflux
How do you assess cardiac tamponade hemodynamically?
reduced diastolic filling due the the heart’s inability to overcome transmural pressures right atrial and ventricular collapse leads to decreased cardiac output and venous return
How do you clinically assess cardiac tamponade? (5)
Pulsus paradoxus (an abnormally large decrease in systolic blood pressure during inspiration– a small decrease of < 10 mmHg is normal
tachycardia and hypotension
JVD (jugular venous distension)
decreased pulse pressure
muffled heart sounds
What is the coagulation test for fibrinolysis?
D-dimer
How much Ca is in LR?
3 mEq/L
What is not found in LR?
Magnesium
What is BE?
Base excess is the acid or base that is required to return the blood pH to normal.
It represents the metabolic component of acid-base balance
What are the body’s buffers? (2)
blood
bicarbonate
What is the most important buffer in the extracellular fluid?
bicarbonate which is effective in metabolic not respiratory disturbances
What is an important noncarbonic buffer in the extracellular fluid?
hemoglobin
What is the compensation for respiratory alkalolsis lasting greater than 24 hours?
decreased 2,3 DPG metabolism
What are the mechanisms for the body to maintain physiologic pH?
buffers
respiratory compensation
renal compensation
