Q

What is theoretical analysis?

A

In the context of cybersecurity, theoretical analysis involves using abstract concepts, models, and frameworks to understand how cyber threats work, how systems can be protected, and how security strategies can be improved. The goal is to explore the principles behind security practices, identify vulnerabilities, and predict the impact of different threat scenarios, often before actual threats are encountered.

An example is The CIA triad which is a theoretical framework that helps evaluate risks to an organisations data by looking at how a particular attack method could potentially compromise an element of the CIA triad. This analysis could involve trying to predict which types of controls would help mitigate these risks.
