White-collar crime
Non-violent crime committed by middle-class people for financial gain e.g. fraud, embezzlement, bribery, identity theft
Corporate crime
Crime committed by companies or businesses in pursuit of profit for the company as a whole rather than the benefit of individual employees.
Moral panic
Exaggerated social reaction to deviance, creating a demand for action against it
Juvenile delinquency
Crimes committed by young people below the age at which ordinary criminal prosecution is possible
Relative deprivation
The feeling of having less than others with whom a legitimate comparison can be made
Targeting
When police focus on a particular group of people, believing them to be more likely to commit crimes than others
Crime prevention
Attempts by governments or others to reduce crime, enforce laws and maintain criminal justice
Cybercrime
Crime involving the use of new technologies such as computers
Internet crime
Crime involving use of the internet
Community sentencing
Punishments involving non-custodial sentences such as doing work for the community
Deterrent
A punishment that stops the offender from committing the offence as they are trying to avoid the punishment
Exile
When the offender is made to leave their home and community as a punishment
Judicial system
The system of courts that interpret and apply laws
Rehabilitation
When the punishment involves work or education to help offenders realise they were wrong to commit the crime and help them resume a law-abiding life
Ostracism
Punishment involving being excluded from the community
