Key Terms Flashcards
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity (speed and direction) changes
Balanced Forces
Forces acting on an object that combine and form at net force of zero
Unbalanced Forces
Forces that cause a change in the motion of an object
Force
A push or pull of an object
Net Force
The combination of all forces acting on an object
Friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact
Static Friction
A friction force that acts on objects that are not moving
Sliding Friction
Friction that occurs when one solid surface slides over another
Rolling Friction
Friction that occurs when an object rolls over a surface
Fluid Friction
A friction force that opposes the motion of an object through a fluid
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Motion
The action or process of being moved
Newtons 1st law - Inertia
The tendency of an object to remain at rest or remain in motion
Newtons 2nd law - Force vs. Mass
When the acceleration of an object depends on 2 variables - the Net Force acting on an object and the Mass of the object
Newtons 3rd law - Action/Reaction
For every Action there is an equal and opposite Reaction
