Key terms Flashcards
Crude birth rate (CBR)
The number of births per thousand individuals in a population per year.
Crude death rate (CDR)
The number of death per thousand individuals in a population per year.
Doubling time
The time in years it takes for a population to double in size. (An NIR of 1% will make a population double in size in 70 years).Formula: 70/NIR
Natural increase rate (NIR)
The rate of human growth expressed as a percentage change per year.
Formula for NIR
(Crude birth rate-crude death rate)/10 (migration is ignored).
Renewable natural capital
Can be generated and/or replaced as fast as it is being used.
Non-renewable natural capital
This is either irreplaceable or only replaced over geological timescales e.g. fossil fuels, soils and minerals.
Total Fertility Rate
The average number of children each woman has over her lifetime.
Natural income
The rate of replacement of a particular resource or natural capital.
Solid domestic Waste
The trash, garbage, rubbish from residential and urban areas. Solid Domestic waste only makes up 5% of our total waste however, it is waste we have control over. People in LEDCs produce less waste than people in MEDCs.
Carrying Capacity
The maximum number of a species or ‘load’ that can be sustainably supported by a given area.
Population Density
The number of individuals of a species per unit of area or volume at a given time
Population Ecology
The study of a populations response to its environment; this includes the pressures of competition, predation, disease, as well as limited resources,
Immigration
Migration of people to a new location (This increases the population)
Demographic Transition model
a model that shows how a population transitions over time
