Drafting Board
The starting point for a drafters workstation. Most are equipped with legs to stand on the floor
T-Square
Free sliding instrument that moves up and down on a drafting board. The “T” end flush against one of the edges of the board. Establishes a horizontal base.
Parallel Rule
device attached to drafting board with thin wire (removable) moving up and down, stays parallel at all times
Drafting Media
material on which drafters put lines on
Tracing Paper
less costly and translucent and usually meant for early sketches
Drafting Tape
holds drafting media to the board. Not as adhesive as masking tape
Vellum Paper
more expensive and more quality paper
Lead Holders
holds lead in place, leads can be interchangeable and the tip of the lead can be any shape.
Mechanical Pencils
holds thinner leads and doesn’t need sharpening but lead breaks easily
Drafting Leads
The leads that fill lead holders. Made out of graphite. Hard lead= thin, light lines. Soft lead= thicker, darker. Hard to Soft; 9H->2H,H,HB,F,B,->6B
Lead Pointers
to hone the end of the lead to the perfect shape in order to produce a specific line thickness
Technical Pens
To make lines with ink. Pen points (removable) line thickness from 0.13mm to 2mm
Architect Scales
measures in ft and inches at ratio of 3/32” = 1’- 0” to 3” = 1’ - 0”
Engineers Scales
measures ft and inches of a foot at user defined ratios based on 10,20,30, etc can set 1” = 200’, 1” = 2000’
Metric Scales
based on the metric system, the metric system, meter and decimeter (tenths) and centimeter (hundredths) 1:10, 1:20, 1:30
