Cross cultural studies
Kind of natural experiment in which the IV is different cultural practices and the DV is the behaviour.
Subculture
Cultural group within a larger cultural group that hold common beliefs and customs.
Collectivist culture
Culture based on valuing the needs of a group or a community over the individual.
Individualistic culture
Culture which prioritises the individual over the group.
Ethnocentrism
View that our culture should be the basis for judgments on other groups.
Eurocentrism
Form of ethnocentrism where emphasis is on western values.
Cultural relativism
All cultures equally worthy of respect.
Beta bias
Assumption all people are the same.
Alpha bias
Assumption there are actual differences between cultural groups.
Imposed etic
Research carried out in other cultures is based upon western ideas.
Emic approach
Acknowledging some phenomena may only apply in particular cultures.
Etic approach
Assumes all human behaviour is universal.
Derived etic approach
Acknowledges the role of culture and recognises behaviour differs from culture to culture.
