Simile
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ). Using like/as
Metaphor
A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes something by saying it’s something else. It is not meant to be taken literally.
caesura
a break between words within a poem
enjambment
In poetry, enjambment is incomplete syntax at the end of a line; the meaning ‘runs over’ or ‘steps over’ from one poetic line to the next.
extended metaphor
An extended metaphor is a version of metaphor that extends over the course of multiple lines, paragraphs, or stanzas of prose or poetry. Extended metaphors build upon simple metaphors with figurative language and more varied, descriptive comparisons.
Volta
In poetry, the volta, or turn, is a rhetorical shift or dramatic change in thought and/or emotion. Turns are seen in all types of written poetry.
personification
the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
rhyme scheme
the pattern of rhymes used in a poem, usually marked by letters to symbolize correspondences, as rhyme royal, AABB ABAB ABBA
rhythm
a strong, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound.
repetition
the act or an instance of repeating or being repeated.
Onomatopoeia
the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named
Narrative voice
Narrative voice is the perspective the story is told from. The writer chooses a narrative voice carefully, as it can have an important effect on the story and the reader’s response.
Propaganda
information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.
jingoism
extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy.
