State
Political association that establishes sovereign authority within defined territorial borders.
State = country
Universally, it is the highest political organization.
Sovereingty
The authority of a state to govern itself/others
Legitimacy
The right and acceptance of an authority
Power
Ability to influence the course of events
Detterence
A strategy designed to prevent aggression by emphasizing the scale of the likely military response
Soft power
The ability to influence other actors by persuading them to follow/agree to norms that produce a desired behaviour.
Attraction, identification.
Hard power
The ability to influence other actors through threats or rewards (typically military or economic).
Punishment, reward.
Interdependence
Mutual dependence. Reciprocal effects among countries
Liberalism
Based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality and equality before the law.
NGO
(non-governmental organization) A group that functions independently of any government.
IGO
(intergovernmental organization) A group of members (sovereign states, countries) working together on issues of mutual self-interest. (WTO, UNICEF)
Globalization
Local, regional and national economies, societies and cultures are becoming increasingly integrated and connected.
Justice
Idea of fairness and with each getting what they deserve
Liberty
Having freedom and autonomy
Equality
The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
