Dipthong
A vowel sound that is the combination of 2 separate sounds, where speaker glides from one to another e.g. the letter combination “oy”/“oi”, as in “boy” or “coin”, and “ow”/ “ou”, as in “cloud” or “cow”.
Voicing
The act of the vocal cords either vibrating(voiced) or not vibrating (unvoiced) in the production of a consonant sound
Place of articulation
position of mouth where consonant sound is produced
manner of articulation
the extent where airflow is interrupted by parts of the mouth in the production of consonant sounds
syllable
a sound unit with a vowel at its center e.g. book’ has one syllable, and ‘ reading’ has two syllables
Accommodation
The way that individuals adjust their speech patterns to match others
sound iconicity
How speakers use variation in pitch, intonation, volume and speed depending on the situation e.g. Saying “shhhh” in a hushed tone is an example of linguistic iconicity
