KEY TERMS Flashcards
LITTORAL ZONE
Wider coastal zone
Including:
Adjacent land and shallower parts just offshore
CLIFF PROFILE
Height and angle of a cliff face as well as its features
Such as:
Wave cut notches or changes in slope angle.
COASTAL ACCRETION
Deposition of sediment at coast and seaward growth of coastline, creating new land
Involves sediment deposition being stabilised by vegetation
DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM
Inputs and outputs of system balance overtime
HOLOCENE
Geological epoch that began 12000 years ago at end of last ice age
Early stages were marked by large sea level rises (35 m) and warming interglacial climate
FAULTS
Major fractures in rocks produced by tectonic forces and involving displacement of rocks on either side of fault line
STRATA
different layers of rock within area and how they relate to each other
DEFORMATION
degree to which rock has been deformed (tilted or folded) by tectonic activity
FAULTING
presence of major fractures that have move rocks from original position
Fetch (waves)
The distance of open sea over which waves can be generated
Pore water pressure
Water within rock exerting pressure via its weight
