A person or organisation that creates media texts
Conglomerate
A combination of multiple industries under one corporate group. Usually has a parent company and multiple subsidiaries. Eg NewsUk owns The Sun and The Guardian
PSB
Public Service Broadcast
Publicly funded company that aims to benefit the interests of the audience
Regulation
A rule that’s issues by a higher power that has to be followed by the producer
Circulation
The number of copies a media text distributed daily
Intertextuality
Where a media text references another media text within itself
Archetype
A reoccurring character type in the media
Stereotype
An ideology that suggests all people of a certain race, age, gender or religion are the same in beliefs and traits
Diegetic sound
Sounds that exists inside of the media text that can be heard by the characters as well as the audience
Non-Diegetic Sound
Sound that is added in editing that is only heard by the audience
Broadsheet
A large newspaper that focuses mainly on serious news
Tabloid
A smaller newspaper that focuses on societal stories about celebrities and TV
Encoding/Decoding
Producers hide meanings in the media texts (encoding), people dig through the lines to find the meanings (decoding)
Synthetic
Made artificially by chemical reaction
Contrapuntal
Where sound/music has a different mood to what’s presented on screen
Hybrid Genre
Combination of two or more genres
Flexi-Narrative
A narrative where stories intertwine and time is not linear. This creates complexity for the audience
Dystopian
Denoting an imagined state where there is great suffering or injustice
Trope
Common convention in a particular medium
Patriarchal Oppresion
Where women are undermined in a society where men are dominant
Guerrilla Marketing
Taking the consumer by surprise to create copious amounts of “buzz”
Verisimilitude
False appearance of being true or real

Pulling apart a text to analyse all aspects

A shot taken directly from above something looking down

A shot which is tilted to one side

A camera technique that allows objects both near and far from the camera to be at focus at the first time
