Key terminology Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Complex system of nerve tissues that controls activities of the body. Made of the brain and spinal cord
Neuron
Electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals.
Neurotransmitter
A brain chemical that relays signals between neurons to communicate information between brain and body.
Reuptake
The process by which unused molecules of a neurotransmitter are absorbed back into the presynaptic neuron
Action potential
Electrical trigger which passes along the axon to stimulate the activation and release of neurotransmitters.
Synaptic transmission
The process through which neurotransmitters travel from the axon to the terminal button, then passed the chemical message across the synaptic cleft on the adjacent neuron.
Hippocampus
Sea horse shaped part of the brain in the lambic system that plays an important part in the consolidation of memory and is responsible for spatial navigation.
Left hemisphere
Controls the right side of the body and receives information from the right visual field.
Involved in speech and language, analysis and calculations, time and sequencing.
Right hemisphere
Receives information from the left visual field and controls the left side of the body.
Deals with creativity, spatial ability, recognition of places and people
