Insider
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with not only its topography but also daily events
Outsider
The perspective of someone who does not know a place well or have any experience in the place
Exogenous
Factors from outside a place that force a change in a places character
Endogenous
Factors within a place that help shape its character
Inter-country migration
The movement of people into a country from another country
Intra-country migration
The movement of people around a country, remaining in the same country
Far place
Somewhere that is known but is not known well due it being a distance away
Near place
Somewhere that is known well due to it being close by
Experienced place
A place that you have visited and know well
Media place
A place that you have experienced through virtually or through other people’s perception
Clone town
A town where the high street is dominated by transnational corporations (TNCs)

- Places that lack unique character or reputation, due to chain stores
replacing local independent shops or a lack of attachment experienced by people visiting
the location.

The subjective and emotional attachment to place
Location
Where a place is on a map - Latitude and longitude
Locale
Locations of different daily activities, e.g. school, theatre, shops, etc.
Space
A place with no meaning
Urbanisation
An increase in the proportion of a population living within urban areas.
Counter-urbanisation
The movement of people away from large urban settlements to smaller urban settlements and rural settlements
Attachment
A sense of binding to a particular location due to positive and intense
experiences.
Gentrification
Renovation of older/deteriorating buildings or areas with the aim of
attracting high-income individuals or elite businesses to a place.
Lived experience
The contribution of experiences and opportunities to an individual’s
views and values.
Perception
A person’s view of a place or issue based on feelings, experience and outside
forces such as the media.
Rebranding
Creating a new look or reputation for an area
Social clusters
Groups of people with similar background frequently living together.
Social exclusion
The inability of a group of people to become involved in the cultural
activities of a place.
